DYLAN FANICO

Biography

I am currently a senior at Wakefield School and will be attending Northeastern University next year. I chose to write about what hosting the World Cup is truly like because I've played, watched, and loved soccer ever since the age of three and it's something I'm truly passionate about. I believe playing brings peace and euphoria and watching bands unlikely friends together through support of their favorite club. The World Cup is the world's biggest sporting event and I've watched every World Cup since 2006. After seeing how Brazil was impacted by the construction of all of those stadiums and the event as a whole I began to recognize even at the age of 12 that the World Cup isn't as glorious of an event as some people paint it to be. I always looked past it as I get wrapped up in the excitement of getting to watch rivalry matches, unlikely competitors facing off, and grand finals, but now, having been given the opportunity to study one topic deeply, I see this as the perfect chance to really make myself and others question whether or not hosting the World Cup is a blessing or a curse.
